From Past to Future: Why I Chose to Live in the Place of a “Special Cleaning”

Two years ago, I stood in this very spot.
It was the site of a “special cleaning”—a place where a person had quietly ended their life’s journey, and some time had passed before they were found.
As a memento sorter, I have stood in many such places of “death.”

Life is carried out of the room, leaving it empty. The world simply labels it a “solitary death” and moves on.
However, I found myself unable to simply erase the “trajectory” of the life that was lived here.

The Soul’s Baton Linked by a Dream

I was originally tasked with renovating this house at the request of the bereaved family. When it came time to discuss the sale of the property, the price the family offered was much lower than the market value.
“Mr. Tazawa, we want you to have this house,” they said.

The family continued, “Through a dream, we felt the thoughts of our parents. They want to entrust this home to you.”
In the work of memento sorting and special cleaning, inexplicable things sometimes occur.

This was not a mere transaction of real estate. It was a “soul’s baton touch”—the entrusting of the memories and the lives carved into this home to me. I wanted to honor that sentiment. I decided to purchase the house and made the commitment to live here myself.

Offering Flowers Where Life Ended

Today, we held the 3rd-anniversary memorial service.
The renovations are complete, and the house has been reborn. The bereaved family rang the doorbell and entered.

We held the service exactly at the spot where the person had passed away.
A highly respected local priest from the Shingon sect offered the prayers.

As the prayers began, a sudden, heavy rain started to fall.
It felt as though the parents in heaven, and the deceased, were shedding tears of relief, nostalgia, and joy. The family watched the rain with serene expressions.

Instead of letting the place of death remain a “place of taboo,” we transformed it into a “place of gratitude and reunion.”
This is the true essence of “standing by someone,” and it is the heart of the LRA Model I advocate.

Listen—A New Footstep Echoes

I live in this house now.
The space the deceased loved, the family memories they tried to protect—I am not just “preserving” them; I am “renewing” them through my daily life.

Behind the walls I renovated, the evidence of a predecessor’s life sleeps.
Upon the floors I tread, the footsteps of a new life are layered.

Whether dead or alive, the only difference is the presence of a physical body. Emotions do not change simply because one has passed away.

I will continue to stand at the “water’s edge” of disposal, remaining sincere toward our ancestors and the deceased.

“To you in heaven—are you watching this?
I will never forget the trajectory of your life.
I will continue to weave the past into a hopeful future.”

Listen—a new footstep echoes. This is how history is woven.
It is the sound of the past and the future holding hands, right here, in this very moment.
